Whoever thought that water quality and texture could have something to do with the way coffee makers work and that different types and qualities of water could force manufacturers to design them in a completely different manner?
Water quality does not greatly affect coffee machines, but it does greatly affect the taste of it, simply because coffee is 99% water, and so subsequently, the quality of the water being used is a big determining factor in the ultimate taste of your coffee.
Soft water (that which contains fewer minerals) is said to be the perfect match for a delicious, steaming cup of coffee and given that hard water is mineral-rich, you understand the rest.
So, if you are not a fan of dull, muddy, acidic, and bittersweet coffee, read and follow up closely on the recommendations on the best coffee maker for hard water that we have to offer.

Top 4 Best Coffee Maker for Hard Water in 2020
1. Touch Choice Single Serve Coffee Brewer T414S - Best Overall
We tried compiling this list in no particular order, but having looked at this particular coffee maker, we were rather compelled to review it first because it is that good.
The price lies at the higher end of the spectrum, but don’t fret, because so is its performance. With a very compact and minimalistic design, the Touch allows you to brew up to 90oz of coffee in a single cycle (accountable due to its 90oz water tank):
90oz of some of the most delicious coffee (made at home, of course) you can get your hands on and the reason for this delectable taste is the optimum brewing temperature that the Touch provides - a steady and maintained optimum temperature (for hard water-based coffee) of almost 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
The thing with coffee is that the more it is brewed at the optimum temperature, the better is its taste. Achieving this optimum temperature is not the difficult part, but rather maintaining it which is easier said than done because of thermodynamics, and it is the thermodynamic issues that the Touch is able to solve with the utmost precision, thus delivering some amazing coffee to you.
2. BUNN Bx Speed Brew Classic 10-Cup Coffee Brewer - Runner-Up
If you are looking for a quality coffee maker capable of dealing with hard water while not spending too much money, then the BUNN BX is one of the bigger players in the market right now.
With a fairly simple and intuitive interface to its name, the BX offers you a more than decent cup of coffee in less than 3 minutes and this, in fact, is one of its USP’s (we know we’re not supposed to have more than one of those but that’s what happens when you pack so many qualities in a single package).
The second USP of the BX is its porcelain coated plate that neither allows scaling to happen nor allows dust and coffee particles to stick to it, thus making its cleaning easy.
3. BUNN GRB Velocity Brew 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer
To be honest and fair, we were a bit skeptical about including the GRB Velocity on this list and we still are in fact and there are a lot of reasons to justify our concerns, but those concerns are forced to take a break and sit back only due to two factors- the first being the very short brew time (under three minutes with tens of seconds to spare) and the second being the just above-average taste that it has to offer made possible by some design tweaks in the spray head.
But addressing our concerns is more important because we are here to help you make an informed choice. To begin with, the design of the GRB is not something that would make you fall head over heels, and it is just okay.
To be critical, the build feels not too sturdy, but that is understood because of its plastic build. Next, the brew time of the GRB is the fastest in the market, but such quick brewing comes at a price: if you are a strong coffee lover, then just steer clear of the GRB. Such quick brewing means that water drains through the grounds extremely fast.
Furthermore, the biggest problem we found with the GRB is that for a considerable price tag, it does not have much (features) to offer, neither is it programmable in any way whatsoever. We could go on and on, but this is enough to cover the GRB in considerate detail.
Personally, we were not quite convinced with the GRB, but yes, it’s more than a decent option for those who are always running late and quickly want to grab a decent cup of coffee.
4. NESPRESSO BY DE'LONGHI ENV150GYAE VERTUOPLUS COFFEE AND ESPRESSO MACHINE
Where the Bunn GRB Velocity lacked in its features for such a hefty price tag, the Nespresso is the complete opposite and the most notable and lovable feature of the Nespresso is its proprietary and highly efficient centrifugation system that allows you to brew all types of coffee ranging from espresso to coffee at just the click of a button and some adjustments.
The taste delivered by the Nespresso is also lip-smacking (a little off the charts as that offered by the GRB). You can’t take anything away from the Nespresso!
It’s designed to recognize coffee capsules and allows you to mix and match your parameters to experiment with your taste buds. The Nespresso almost takes away most of your work and handles it on its own.
The recipe for coffee sounds fairly simple - just add hot water to ground beans and sugar as per your taste. However, perfecting this simple recipe still remains elusive to a majority of people and to help them along the way, science came to the rescue with coffee makers.
But not all coffee makers are the same and with further research, it was discovered that not even all water is the same and that its different properties react with coffee in different ways to give different tastes.
With hard water though, remember that it is the type of hardness that matters. If your source of water is high in levels of bicarbonates, then you should opt for specialized coffee makers designed specifically for hard water.
If your water is high in levels of magnesium ions, then it is actually good for you since they increase the extraction of coffee and lead to improved tastes instead. So, before investing in a coffee maker for hard water, do your research first about the nature of your water source. As far as an opinion is concerned, out of the four items reviewed, we would recommend that you choose the Touch coffee maker because it is just perfect in all aspects and is the best coffee maker for hard water. If its price tag bothers you a bit, then, by all means, go with the Bunn BX at a relatively lower price since it delivers better performance than expected.
